ABOUT

Hi and welcome!

As you might imagine, I'm a big advocate of being outside. I believe time spent outdoors to be essential for well-being and I know of few better ways to be active, get fresh air, and spend time in nature than through backpacking. Where else can you spend entire days on the trail and feel the empowerment and self-sufficiency that come with carrying everything you need right on your back?

My own introduction to backpacking, as an undergraduate at UNC more than 15 years ago, was on a guided trip. I know it can seem daunting to have the right equipment, know where you are going, pack and prepare your own food, and know that you aren't taking unnecessary risks. I want to lower the barrier to entry into backpacking for beginners and provide a fun way to get out and explore for more experienced hikers. My aim is for you to leave a trip with me not just feeling physically accomplished and mentally refreshed, but with the know-how and confidence to plan your own backpacking adventures - if that's what you're after.

Right now I am running all of Small World Backpackers' operations - with the invaluable support of my friends, family, and community. I'll plan our trips, walk you through preparations, and be your guide. I've done a lot of hiking and backpacking on my own and with groups as both a participant and as a guide. Some of my long distance hikes include backcountry camping in Denali National Park AK, the 1,175 mile Mountains-to-Sea Trail across NC, the Art Loeb Trail in NC, the Coast to Coast Walk in England, and many many smaller hikes across the United States. For my safety and yours I am also a Certified Wilderness First Responder.

My grandmother used to say of the ocean "It washes the darkness from your soul" and that struck true. Now I know that for me this claim also applies to the forests, rivers, mountains, and fields of my home state - North Carolina.

Best wishes to you all on your paths and I hope we can travel together for a weekend! or two!

Kindly,

Susannah
